A Victorian shipping merchant's legacy

Sudley was the home of Victorian ship owner, merchant and art collector George Holt and his family. The house, built in the early 1800s, is surrounded by pleasant gardens and parkland and displays fine 18th and 19th century paintings from Holt's collection, together with works from the Walker Art Gallery.
Victorian Liverpool had many great merchants' houses with private art collections. Only the pictures at Sudley survive in their original setting. Visitors to Sudley House can enjoy great British paintings, including works by Landseer, Turner, Corot, Gainsborough and Reynolds, and fine examples of furniture, surrounded by Victorian décor.
