Walker Art Gallery
The Walker's collection
includes some world-famous masterpieces. Eminent 19th century collectors,
who made their fortunes from the thriving port of Liverpool, brought together
many of the greatest treasures.
In the award-winning
Sculpture Gallery, the centrepiece is John Gibson's marble statue, "The
Tinted Venus". A fine collection of Renaissance and Old Master paintings
includes "Christ Discovered in the Temple" by Simone Martini, a powerful
early Rembrandt self-portrait and one of Poussin's finest classical landscapes.
The contemporary collection
holds many prize-winning paintings from the internationally renowned Liverpool
John Moores Exhibition, staged by the Walker Art Gallery every two years.
Works include David Hockney's "Peter Getting Out of Nick's Pool", first
prize winner in 1967. Other important 20th century paintings include works
by Sickert, Nash, Bridget Riley, Bomberg and Lowry. The next John Moores
Exhibition will open in September 2002. |
